Germination is a vital stage where everything begins. This part of the growth cycle might not receive much attention as the flowering and vegetative phases, but it’s one of the most crucial stages. If the process of germination fails, your potential harvest won’t make it to the second step. Some people tend to think that the germination process is just about tossing seeds into a growing medium and then waiting for baby plants to show up. In some cases, such a method does work out, but there are multiple approaches and ways through which you can successfully germinate your cannabis seeds.
There are several pieces of the puzzle that some of the growers fail to acknowledge, where they provide darkness and water but not the right soil for the seeds to germinate. Since natural soil is a living organism, it contains bacteria that benefit the whole process. The bacteria encourage germination, photosynthesis, and plant growth.
You can either buy the seeds from offline stores or can surf through the internet to find quality cannabis seeds, be it Gelato 41 or any other strain.
What is Germination?
Before delving into the tips and methods, a grower can establish for a successful germination process, let’s understand germination’s biology first.
Every seed involved in such a process is the genetic material of plant reproduction. Small seeds naturally get dispersed by means like animal excretion/ingestion and wind. If you happen to be lucky, the seed can reach to a whole new environment that activates the germination process. These crucial environmental factors are a combination of water, temperature, and the depth of a seed’s burial and the quality of the seeds. In the modern age, growers can optimize and stimulate to increase germination chances.
There are many methods that the growers can opt for, and each is equally good as the other. To understand ways to improve the germination of cannabis seeds, let’s shed light on some of the essential pointers.
1. Design an ideal environment
An ideal environment is crucial for the seeds to replenish and grow. So, how do you maintain or even design the environment? Well, the humidity levels should remain between 70-90% with an area of temperature between 22–25°C. You can easily maintain the climate with the help of a propagation chamber and high humidity levels by installing humidifiers. The temperatures can also be increased and decreased with the help of fans and heaters. After this, use the hygrometer to get a persistent temperature and humidity readings.
2. Sow cannabis seeds into the ultimate growing medium
One of the means of germinating seeds is to sow them into the final growing medium directly, be it the garden bed or a large pot. The most significant benefit of sowing cannabis seeds into the final container is that you can steer clear of the hassle that comes with transferring the seedlings into bigger pots. Such a process damages roots and slows down growth.
If you choose to sow the seeds with the help of this method, create a hole of 1 centimeter in the soil, place the seed in that hole, and cover it with the soil and water around the sowed area. Just be careful of not overwatering.
3. A paper towel can initiate the process.
A paper towel is a highly effective way of germinating seeds. A lot of gardeners use this way to germinate seeds of almost all the species of plants. To work around such a process, you would require clean water, unbleached paper towels, misting bottles, two dining plates, and a dark and warm area to store the seeds. Now get started by placing three paper towels on the plate and mist them lightly. Take the seeds and put them on these moistened paper towels, leaving proportionate space in between to avoid new roots from tangling. Perform the same task again and put the other plate on the top to serve it as a lid that will help in maintaining humidity and trapping moisture.
Transport this germination chamber to a dark and warm place. Even though the germination speed depends on the cannabis strain you have cultivated, some of the strains will commence developing roots within the 24-hour mark.
4. Conduct a floating test for cannabis seeds.
If you’re thinking of saving time, take a quick test of starting seeds you need to germinate. Fill us the glass with either spring or distilled water and place the cannabis seeds on its surface. Even though there are two possible outcomes out of this test, but you’ll get a sound clarity on which seeds can successfully germinate.
After leaving the seeds for a couple of hours, you’ll find seeds that sink to the bottom and the rest that remains on the surface. In such a test, patience is necessary as good-quality seeds will absorb enough water and will take time to fill dry spaces within them. The seeds that sank at the bottom are the viable ones.
5. Growing plugs and jiffy pots are standard options
Both of the products are small chunks through which an ideal environment can be created for the seeds to germinate. Growing plugs and jiffy pots usually come all packaged in a tray, allowing growers to keep their germinated seeds organized and save space. While growing plugs are pre-moistened and require the seeds to drop inside already-made holes, jiffy pots are made with dried peat and require hydration before any use.
Once you have placed the seeds in these plugs or pots, keep them in a hot environment. One of the most practical benefits of this method is that both the pots and plugs can be directly planted into the ground. This helps in reducing plant stress and keeps the roots intact.
6. Avoid germinating seeds for a long duration.
This is a constant mistake that rookie growers make while germinating. If you wait till cotyledons appear, the entire transplanting process becomes complicated. Since the root is the most crucial part at this point, exposing them to too much light and air can permanently impede their development. You must allow tap-root to grow around 2 centimetres before making a transplant.
As growth is the most critical phase, germination sets the tone for your plants to develop. Take your time and design the conditions for your seeds to produce with a prominent and successful yield. These tips can help to improve the germinating process and give a good yield.
